Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) at OHIM

As part of OHIM's commitment to meet the highest possible environmental standards, the Office is taking part in the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), a voluntary initiative designed to improve the environmental performance of companies and organizations.

OHIM achieved its EMAS Registration (Reg. No: ES-CV-000026) and has been successfully running an Environmental Management System in line with ISO 14001.

Each year OHIM publishes an environmental statement validated by an accredited verifier setting out the results achieved against the objectives as well as the future steps to be undertaken in order to improve its environmental performance.

The Office´s current environmental objectives are:

  • Achieving better energy sustainability for its main building by actions such as installation of presence sensors in the offices, substitution of conventional reactors for electronic ones, replacement of fluorescent tubes by eco-tubes, and installation of natural light sensors
  • Neutralizing OHIM's CO2 emissions by purchasing electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources and buying carbon credits to compensate for the CO2 emissions issued from staff flights and office heating
  • Improving the energy efficiency of its current building with at least one level on the energy efficiency scale
  • Replacing 28% of OHIM´s office surface with a new building which achieves the BREEAM ES (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification scheme with a minimum classification of Very Good and obtains level A on the energy efficiency scale.
  • Developing a Sustainable Mobility Plan for its staff in order to reduce air pollution and encourage eco-friendly means of transport.
