Country Overview - Portugal & The Community Trade Mark


Portugal, which has a population of 10.6m, joined the EU in 1986. The country has a rich history of seafaring and discovery, and famous names from history include explorers such as Vasco da Gama. Since joining the EU the country has become a diversified and increasingly service-based economy with privatisation of many state-controlled firms and the liberalisation of key areas such as the financial and telecommunications sectors.

 

 

 

 

Economic growth was above the EU average for much of the 1990s, but fell back in both 2008 and 2009. The service sector accounts for an estimated 73% of GDP, followed by industry 24%) and agriculture (3%).

Portuguese companies have applied for 8,400 CTMs to date with around 1,000 filings annually.

World marks are the most popular, amounting to 53%, followed by figurative marks (46%). The most popular goods and services applied for are in classes 35, 25 and 42.

Portuguese companies and their representatives are among the most enthusiastic users of online filing, with almost 99% of applications coming electronically and almost none by fax or mail.
