Country Overview - Lithuania & The Community Trade Mark

Lithuania is the largest and most populous of the three Baltic states which joined the EU in 2004. The country was the first occupied Soviet republic to break free from the Soviet Union and restore its sovereignty via the declaration of independence in March 1990. Lithuania has a population of 3.4m. The landscape is predominantly flat with many rivers and lakes and includes 99 km of the Baltic Sea coastline, which is mostly devoted to recreation and nature preservation. Forests cover just over 30% of the country.

Lithuania's economy grew on average 8% per year from 2004-2008, driven by exports and domestic consumer demand. Unemployment stood at 4.8% in 2008, while wages grew at double digit rates. The service sector accounts for an estimated 63% of Lithuanian GDP, followed by industry (32%) and agriculture (5%). Lithuanian undertakings have filed few CTMs to date – just 421 so far - but demand has been growing. Last year 111 CTMs were filed compared with 68 in 2007, and this year so far, there have been 105 filings. |

Figurative marks are the most popular with Lithuanian enterprises and account for 62% of applications, followed by word marks (33%). The most popular goods and services applied for are in classes 35, 42 and 29. |
The majority of Lithuanian trade marks (95%) are filed electronically, with mail accounting for 4% and fax under 2%.
